All I Want For Christmas

Twenty-five years ago, Mariah Carey released a snazzy little Christmas tune called “All I Want for Christmas Is You”. It has been a staple in holiday rotations ever since. It came out in 1994, the year after I graduated from high school. I have always liked it—I mean, Mariah has an amazing voice, how could you not like this song?

We all know the lyrics and we all know that Mariah is singing to her beau in this song. (Or, a guy she wants to be her beau.) But, as I am wont to do lately, I listened a little differently this year. Or, maybe it is more appropriate for me to say that I directed my feelings while singing it a little differently this year.

Rather than singing along like I normally do, thinking of my hubby, I started thinking how beautiful it could be if we adjusted our outlook on it and sang it to Jesus. I mean, read the lyrics below as if you were directing them to Jesus.

I don't want a lot for Christmas
There is just one thing I need
I don't care about the presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true oh
All I want for Christmas is you

I don't want a lot for Christmas
There is just one thing I need, and I
Don't care about the presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I don't need to hang my stocking
There upon the fireplace
Santa Claus won't make me happy
With a toy on Christmas day

I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
All I want for Christmas is you

I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
Baby (Jesus) all I want for Christmas is you

All I want for Christmas is you, baby (Jesus)

It works well, doesn’t it? Ok, not for every line of the song, but for most of them it does! And, yes, I inserted Jesus twice at the bottom.

I don’t know about you, but all I want, and need is Jesus. I need Him every hour of every day. And, God gave Jesus to us, graciously, mercifully. All we need to do is open our hearts to Him, accept Him, and invite Him in.

I wish each and every one of you a Merry Christmas. One that is filled with the spirit, kindness, and love of Jesus.
